Congratulations Junior Squash Players!

Three Seattle Athletic Club boys from our own junior squash program traveled to Baltimore, MD to compete in the U.S. Junior Squash Silver Nationals, held April 25 to 27, 2008 at the Meadow Mill Athletic Club. Zane McGee-Lowdermilk, Steve Severson and Thomas Kraft are all coached by our own squash pros, Shabana, Yusuf and Ayub Khan. Zane entered the Boys U-13, while Thomas and Steve competed in the Boys U-19. Zane came in seeded twelfth in a starting field of 31, while Thomas and Steve were seeded numbers one and two respectively in their field of 26 players. Zane played through five rounds, and with help from his "coaches" at the tournament, Steve and Thomas, he just kept on winning. Zane's win in the Boys U-13 final on Sunday was quite the upset! Thomas and Steve each had a bye in the round of 32, and then each of them worked their way through the next three rounds, each continuing to win. Thomas and Steve met for an all Seattle final on Sunday afternoon. Steve won the grueling five game match, winning the Boys U-19, with Thomas taking second. So our Seattle Athletic Club junior boys did everyone proud as they came in first, first and second in their respective draws!

Congratulations again to the Jr. Squash players. We all look forward to hearing about your future successes!

Maybe it’s Your Metabolism!

Metabolic rate, or metabolism, is the rate at which the body expends energy. This is also referred to as the “caloric burn rate.” Knowing your metabolic rate is vital for weight loss as well as for determining the proper feeding amounts needed to treat various disease states.

Calculating your resting metabolic rate has not been very reliable, until now. The Seattle Athletic Club can now measure your metabolic rate and determine precisely what you need to do to lose weight with MetaCheck, a hospital-quality measurement of metabolism that determines the exact number of calories each person requires while at rest. This test is simple and painless... just sit back, relax, and breathe!

As a member of the club, you will be invited to join everyone for a social gathering the night before each event to meet others you will be running with and receive running tips. There is no cost to join, and you will receive a free T-shirt to wear while you run, as well as a general training outline to get ready for the event you have chosen. This is the perfect opportunity to make new friends while staying fit and focused throughout the entire year.

Meet Evan W. Saxton
By Elizabeth Shore, Member Service Director

Evan Saxton joined the Club in the fall of 2007 with the goal of stepping out of his lifestyle and comfort zone and becoming a healthier, more active person. In the first six months, he reached his first goal by losing over 50 lbs. He worked out largely on his own, with the support of ActivTrax, and the website www.getfitslowly.com. He used a series of sensible, simple changes that are permanent and sustainable. He worked at his own pace and introduced varied exercises into his routine to push himself. He also took advantage of weekend sport adventures, including snowboarding and biking.

Within six months, Evan found that his lifestyle had indeed changed for the better. He felt much more energy and endurance—he could climb flights of stairs without getting winded. And he had gained flexibility, which allowed him freedom of movement and functionality—one example: he could now easily reach his board bindings and shoe laces.

Evan continues to enhance his health. Now that he has reached his initial fitness goals, his new focus has become having fun with sports. He is biking more often and has joined an ultimate frisbee league. He is also seeking more balance and flexibility. Evan’s goals are becoming more and more exciting, and his enthusiasm for life is growing as well. His dedication and commitment to health inspires many. We are happy to have Evan as part of the SAC family!
