eRace Poverty Follow-Up

After nine months of living with those in poverty in various parts of the world, I have returned to Seattle, at least temporarily. My first stop was New York, where I volunteered with a community based organization in Brooklyn. I worked day to day with emergency food supplies, public assistance and welfare counseling, and employment services, and even was able to experience homelessness for a weekend. The next stop was a small town in Southern Belize, where I spent each day working with struggling farming families in the surrounding rural villages. Also I was fortunate enough to have opportunities to spend time in Honduras and Guatemala doing further research on sustainable agriculture in the context rural Central America. Two of my favorite experiences from there were spending Christmas with a family in a small village in the mountains of Central Guatemala and living with an organic farming family in Southern Belize for a few days. The defining portion of my journey was the three months I spent in East Africa, mainly with a children’s home in Kenya. I lived as part of a large family with around 100 total orphans, almost all of whom had lost their parents to AIDS, and was able to connect with them in ways I never imagined. In many remote villages I visited in Kenya, I was the first “Mzungu” (white person) the people had ever seen. Also, I went to Uganda for about a week to spend time at the country U.N. headquarters to interview their employees and research their programs. On my way home from Kenya, I stopped in Europe for a short visit with some family and friends I have in various locations there, which gave me a much needed opportunity to unwind and process it all.

On June 18th, I returned to Seattle, where I hope to be able to settle long term. The next few months I will possibly be back at the SAC training and also will be working very hard on fundraising for an organization I cofounded last year, ERace Poverty. I would like to sincerely thank you all for your support as I embarked on this journey for the purpose of researching different poverty programs around the world and creating future partnerships. Please keep an eye out for information on another event coming up soon in the lobby of the club, which will include a presentation about my experiences the past nine months. We would greatly appreciate your support as we continue to work toward launching our programs to reach thousands, even millions of people in the US and many other countries around the world. For more information about my journey, please see my blog at eracepoverty.blogspot.com, and for more information about Erace Poverty, please visit our website at eracepoverty.org. If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to ask me if you see me at the club, or simply email me at jbates@eracepoverty.org.
