In the coming weeks we will be transitioning our new computer servers, workstations and point of sale kiosks to function on this new system. This process may cause some delays. We ask for your patience during this time. In certain cases, some memberships will require a new membership card and/or photo be integrated into their accounts. These items are essential to assisting us in providing the highest level of security for you and your guests.

Pilates Exercise of the Month on The Reformer – Long Stretch
By Jocelyn Paoli, Stott Certified Pilates Instructor

Here's a peek at an exercise called Long Stretch demonstrated on Pilates equipment called the Universal Reformer. Please note a certified instructor must assist with any exercises in the Pilates Studio.

    THE REFORMER - LONG STRETCH

If you haven't visited our Blog, or are unaware that we are blogging, be sure to take a look at what we're discussing. Last month we talked about Self-Myofascial Release Techniques or Foam Rolling, How to Properly Timetable Exercise, How To Recover From an Exercise That Makes You Sore and/or Stiff!. This month we'll be discussing lots of great topics to help you keep on track this Fall; check out the blog and follow our postings.

    Exercise and Cold Weather

Winter can frustrate the most motivated exercisers. And if you're not so motivated, it's all too easy to pack your workout gear away with your summer clothes. But keeping up your exercise routine in cold weather can be rewarding.

For one thing, outdoor exercise is a sure cure for cabin fever and the winter blues. And it increases energy, which can be sapped by gloomy weather. Exercise also bolsters your immune system — studies show that moderate exercisers get 20 to 30 percent fewer colds than nonexercisers do. And, you won't have to scramble to get in shape for swimsuit season.

With the right clothing and a little planning, cold-weather exercise can be safe, effective and, yes, fun.

    Swim Paddles
    By Teresa Nelson, Aquatics Director

At the Seattle Athletic Club we carry two different types of paddles for your use. Often, as instructors, we are asked about the purpose of each. Here they are for you!

Both paddles, the Strokemaker and the Han’s paddle, are designed to help create a better “feel” for the water, increase strength, and ensure a full swim stroke is being completed. The holes in the paddle are designed to relieve shoulder stress and to allow you to feel the water move past your fingers.

LEARN MORE ABOUT USING SWIM PADDLES IN YOUR WORKOUTS

Paddles are also available for purchase in our Pro Shop.

Please ask any of our swim instructors or e-mail Aquatics Director Teresa Nelson if you have any further questions.

    Best Defense Against Flu

With the onset of school and cooler weather, we face the start of another cold and flu season. Flu experts are warning that this year may be particularly severe. In addition to the seasonal flu, we expect outbreaks of novel H1N1 "swine" flu.

The good news is that so far, novel H1N1 flu is only about as serious as seasonal flu. The bad news is that it appears to be much more contagious, and we may have to deal with a lot of it in addition to the seasonal flu.
