On Our Blog... Don’t Let the Holidays Derail You, Start Now!
A common occurrence seems to happen every year for typical health club members and even dedicated ones. The holidays come and they start to slack off from their exercise routine and good dietary habits. Then they make the excuse that’s its too hard during the holidays and they will start over again after new years.
As humans sometimes we don’t realize how much control we have over our lives and with proper decision making and planning we can foresee and overcome obstacles that may stand in our way. With the holidays coming, its time to make a plan and stick to it, and create the momentum that will carry us through.

News from the Massage Department
As we head into the shorter days and colder temperatures of winter, it is an opportunity for us to move inward and rise to spend more time caring for one's self. Massage is just one component to consider adding to your healthier lifestyle and your body’s mechanical needs.
We have a couple of announcements to make in regards to our fine staff. The first is the addition of Whitney Lawless. You may have already had a great yoga class with Whitney but now you can have a great massage too! Whitney will be working Saturday & Sunday, 10:00 am-2:00 pm.
Whitney graduated in 2004 from the Health Works Institute in Bozeman, Montana. Whitney integrates deep listening with bodywork and is skilled in the gentle art of craniosacral work as well as deep tissue massage. Whitney also brings a sense of laughter and joy into everything she does. If you can't find her doing massage or teaching yoga you will most likely find her performing with a local theatre troop or studying the circus arts.
We must also announce that our friend Solmar will be moving his shift to Sunday mornings, so you can still get a chance to spend some therapeutic time with him.
Enjoy this time of transition into the profound stillness of winter. Come warm your soul with us.

Help Keep the Club Germ Free
With the onset of another cold and flu season, we would like to remind everyone to take a little extra care wiping down equipment during, and after, your workouts.
Flu experts have warned that this year may be particularly severe. The good news is that so far, novel H1N1 flu is only about as serious as seasonal flu. The bad news is that it appears to be much more contagious, and we may have to deal with a lot of it in addition to the seasonal flu.

Ski Conditioning: Are You Ready for Ski Season?
In the Pacific Northwest, all the signs are pointing to an early ski season. With some resorts opening early, Seattle ski enthusiasts are daydreaming about slicing down a powder-covered mountain a'la Picabo Street. Of course, most of us don’t possess the downhill talent of Picabo, or her top-of-the line equipment, but that doesn't mean you can’t get the same thrill when barreling down the mountain. All it takes is well maintained equipment, fresh snow, and a conditioning routine!

GOLF SCHOOL TESTIMONIAL:
A couple of years ago I enrolled in Dave Boiven's winter golf program. Dave emphasized stretching, posture and balance. He also paid close attention to developing a consistent swing plane. I was surprised that these sessions could make such a difference. You see, our class never once hit a golf ball - instead sticking to the fundamentals of the swing. When I began playing again in early April, I found my iron play was the most accurate I had ever experienced. By mid-summer my handicap had dropped by 5 full strokes - to the lowest point since I had begun playing. I decided to take the course for the next two consecutive winters.
This past Fall I had developed some disabling low-back pain - probably caused by years of long distance running combined with never stretching properly. As a result, I had stopped running altogether and had limited my golf play. I could not execute a full golf swing without considerable pain. I often could not complete the full 18 holes. My handicap ballooned to the highest level in twenty years.
I signed up with Katrina Yniguez as my personal trainer. Katrina carefully experimented with exercises that strengthened my core muscles and significantly increased my range of motion. I have now begun to run again though not as far as before. I have also rejoined my regular foursome in golf and play as frequently as I did before the back pain had intensified. While I must now do a series of exercises every day (or suffer the consequences) the level of pain has diminished markedly and I am no longer restricted in my daily activities. My golf swing has been modified somewhat to minimize the stress on my back, but distance and accuracy have returned. Handicap is dropping rapidly.
