Seattle Marathon/Half Marathon

November 29th marked the annual Seattle Marathon/Half Marathon. The temperature was practically ideal for this time of year, understanding that this event has been known for snow flurries, super dark clouds, and rain. The Seattle race is considered one of the toughest around with the abundance of hill climbing (think Madison and Interlaken to name a few) and downhills that make the strongest quads twinge. Many of the following athletes participate in our Tuesday night track/hill workouts, our weekend long runs, and other training opportunities they can fit into their schedules. The Seattle Athletic Club had a fantastic showing from our members:

FIRST TIME MARATHONERS:
Skip Sahlin 3:22.53

FIRST TIME HALF MARATHONERS:
Tom Camp 2:19.07
David Landers 1:59.14
Susan Shulenberger 2:27.50
Wendy Hilliker 2:04.34
Darin Smith 1:59.16

GOLF SCHOOL TESTIMONIAL:
A couple of years ago I enrolled in Dave Boiven's winter golf program. Dave emphasized stretching, posture and balance. He also paid close attention to developing a consistent swing plane. I was surprised that these sessions could make such a difference. You see, our class never once hit a golf ball - instead sticking to the fundamentals of the swing. When I began playing again in early April, I found my iron play was the most accurate I had ever experienced. By mid-summer my handicap had dropped by 5 full strokes - to the lowest point since I had begun playing. I decided to take the course for the next two consecutive winters.

This past Fall I had developed some disabling low-back pain - probably caused by years of long distance running combined with never stretching properly. As a result, I had stopped running altogether and had limited my golf play. I could not execute a full golf swing without considerable pain. I often could not complete the full 18 holes. My handicap ballooned to the highest level in twenty years.

I signed up with Katrina Yniguez as my personal trainer. Katrina carefully experimented with exercises that strengthened my core muscles and significantly increased my range of motion. I have now begun to run again though not as far as before. I have also rejoined my regular foursome in golf and play as frequently as I did before the back pain had intensified. While I must now do a series of exercises every day (or suffer the consequences) the level of pain has diminished markedly and I am no longer restricted in my daily activities. My golf swing has been modified somewhat to minimize the stress on my back, but distance and accuracy have returned. Handicap is dropping rapidly.

Triathlon Swim Training

This is a twelve-week course. The first 8 weeks begins January 11. This is ALL drill and technique work. There is no emphasis on speed or endurance. This is only to prepare you to swim correctly and more efficiently for your freestyle swimming stroke. This is important for those looking to improve their swimming abilities in 2010.

Then we take a one week break before we begin the next set of lessons which includes a 4 week course that focuses on drills and skills for open water swimming along with a continued emphasis on your stroke technique. This will begin on March 15. We will also go over additional tips for open water swimming and racing.

After each workout you are assigned “homework” to practice 2-3 days a week on your own to get you more comfortable with the drills and in the pool in general.

Members: $325, Non-members: $360
