Today’s Sports Conditioning
By Paul Nelson, Personal Trainer
Today all elite athletes are well aware of the importance of cross training to boost performance in their particular sport. As we saw and heard during the 2010 Olympic Games, just practicing your sport isn’t enough anymore. Athletes need to build a strong fitness base in the gym.
Enter the world of general sports conditioning. Increasingly sports training programs are becoming more generalized rather than highly specific because of the similarities found in all sports. An intense fitness base can be built in the gym following the same sequence of working on stability and mobility first, then strength and power. I will talk about each element here and the importance of a functional movement screen as a measuring tool.

Learn to Love Lap Swimming
A Firsthand Perspective by Swimming Instructor, Shawndelle Jones
When I was a child I went out for swim team, after about four laps the coach stopped me. “I don’t think you are going to be able to do this,” He said. (no cushy sensitive coaching techniques back then.)
Looking back I can understand why the coach had concern—after those four laps I was completely winded. Most of the other kids around me were calmly swimming length after length, back and forth, over and over again like a giant multiple player pong game. No heavy panting, no choking on water. I was nearly hyperventilating.

Introduction to Meditation
Meditation is a healing practice that allows us to experience inner calm and deep relaxation. Practiced for thousands of years, it’s not about forcing the mind to be quiet; it’s finding the silence that’s already there and making it a part of your life.
Practicing meditation on a daily basis allows you to weave silence and stillness into your mind and body to create a life of greater compassion and fulfillment. Meditation is very simple; you sit comfortably with eyes closed, and silently repeat a mantra. There is no equipment required so anyone can do it easily.
There are multitudes of studies which document the physical benefits of meditation. Basically meditation decreases the effects of stress on the physical body: lowering blood pressure, heart rate, breathing and decreasing stress hormone levels. Other benefits documented through research include decreased anxiety and depression, improved sleep, improved athletic performance, improved attention span, improved immune function and many others.
You are invited to attend a free Introduction to Meditation Class at Seattle Athletic Club Northgate taught by Mary Davis, MSN, RN, ARNP. Mary has been meditating for 40 years, and is a certified meditation instructor through the Chopra Center for Wellbeing. She worked in Family Practice as a Nurse Practitioner for 35 years, with practices in an HMO, Community Clinic, Emergency Department and Walk In Clinics. For a number of years she was the Director of the Family Nurse Practitioner Program at Seattle University College of Nursing.
Thursday, April 8th at 9:00am
Friday, April 9th at 7:00pm
Learn about the benefits and basic principles of meditation. After this class you will be well on your way to establishing your own personal meditation practice. Please make sure to sign up at the front desk.

Film Night: Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942)
We conclude the American singer and composer series with a biopic on George M. Cohan, directed by Michael Curtiz (Casablanca, White Christmas and 173 other films). Cohan was a child star who made it big in the American musical scene as playwright, composer, lyricist, singer, actor, singer, dancer and producer. He essentially owned Broadway in the decade before World War I. FDR presented him with a congressional medal for his morale-boosting songs Over Thereand You’re a Grand Old Flag. Jimmy Cagney plays the feisty Cohan and the shift from gangster to song and dance man is lots of fun. A grand conclusion to a celebration of American music.
